Gosh, it's hot

The race has begun ... at least, I assume it has begun.  It was set to begin at 12:00 noon PDT (about three and a half hours ago), but the town of Oceanside would have been overwhelmed by all the support vehicles for the 18 8-person teams, 26 4-person teams, and 6 2-person teams (the 47 soloists left earlier in the week ... soloists?!?), so our two RVs and our "utility vehicle" headed out to Brawley, CA, where we'll have our first "team exchange" around 8:30 p.m. tonight.  So, now we wait.

We're only 120 miles, or so, east of San Diego, but, as this picture makes abundantly clear, the Imperial Valley most definitely is not San Diego:

And it's about as hot here as that picture makes it look.  Actually, it's "only" 98 degrees right now, so the locals are all running around with jackets on complaining about the "cold snap."  Don & his riding partner have the good fortune of starting their "on" shift at about dusk, so they'll cross much of the remaining California desert in the cool darkness of night, and, if all goes according to plan, roll into Arizona shortly before sun-up.
